Fera acts as a UK National Reference Laboratory under assimilated Regulation (EU) 2017/625, supporting official controls across food and feed.

Setting and upholding standards

Fera acts as National Reference Laboratory under assimilated Regulation (EU) 2017/625 on official controls and other official activities performed to ensure the application of food and feed law, rules on animal health and welfare, plant health and plant protection products.

The Regulation establishes a harmonised framework of rules for monitoring and enforcing feed and food law to ensure feed and food is safe and wholesome.

We are a National Reference Laboratory for the following areas

Halogenated Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Feed and Food

Appointed UK NRLs

Laboratories designated as a NRL must adhere to the requirements outlined in Article 100 in assimilated (EU) law 2017/625 and perform the responsibilities and tasks detailed in Article 101.

Collaboration and Sharing of Expertise

These laboratories must collaborate with other laboratories in the UK and internationally in their particular area of expertise and disseminate nationally information by participating in the activities of international organisations and standardisation activities.

Scientific and Technical Assistance

NRL's provide impartial expert scientific and technical advice to the Competent Authorities (CAs), Official Laboratories (OLs) and other relevant laboratories.

Incident Response

The overall objective of the NRLs is to improve the quality, accuracy and comparability of the results at Official Laboratories (OLs).
