The data your risk assessment depends on

Environmental fate studies underpin every environmental risk assessment, providing the evidence on how your product degrades, sorbs and moves through soil, water and sediment. We deliver the full range of regulatory-compliant studies from our GLP-accredited laboratories, with bespoke designs where standard guidelines aren't sufficient.

What we test and why it matters

Predicted environmental concentrations can only be calculated accurately if the underlying fate data is robust. Our studies cover every major fate process — biodegradation in soil and water, sorption behaviour, hydrolysis, photolysis, manure fate and field dissipation — following OECD and other internationally recognised guidelines. With improved in-life capacity and our SoFie™ radio-HPLC modules detecting lower levels of radioactivity than conventional systems, we deliver better data with more efficient turnaround times.

Full process coverage

Biodegradation, sorption, hydrolysis, photolysis, aquatic sediment systems, manure and field dissipation — all study types under one roof.

Radiolabelled studies fully supported

Our radio-HPLC and SoFie™ module investment gives us improved sensitivity for low-level radioactivity detection without compromising chromatography quality.

Temperatures from 12°C to 20°C

Our improved in-life capacity allows us to offer the full spectrum of laboratory environmental fate studies maintained at either 12°C or 20°C as required.

Hard surface fate studies available

We design and perform studies for biocides and industrial chemicals — including lab-scale sorption, wash-off and field monitoring for hard surface exposure routes.

Study design to dossier delivery

Our scientists support you from experimental design and test item synthesis through to on-time report delivery and response to regulatory questions.

Bespoke designs where guidelines fall short

Where standard OECD protocols don't cover your compound or scenario, we design and validate the protocol you need.

Aged Sorption — a higher-tier refinement option

In partnership with environmental modelling specialists Enviresearch, we offer a complete aged sorption service — from experimental study design through to higher-tier groundwater modelling. Together, Fera and Enviresearch helped develop the regulatory guidance itself.

Working with the people who wrote the guidance

Fera and Enviresearch have spent over ten years developing and refining the aged sorption guidance with the UK Chemicals Regulation Directorate. When regulatory questions arise, we're not just following the rules — we can explain why they exist and what they're trying to achieve.
