Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme (WIIS)
Fera's Wildlife Incident Unit (WIU) at serves a critical role in investigating the effects of pesticides on animals and the natural environment through its active support of the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme (WIIS), turning complex evidence into clear, actionable insight.
]Protecting wildlife. Informing regulation.
The Wildlife Incident Unit (WIU) helps uncover the causes of suspected pesticide poisoning in wildlife and other animals, turning complex evidence into clear, actionable insight.
When chemicals are used correctly, findings can support the approvals process and guide safer, evidence-based use. Where misuse is identified, whether accidental or deliberate, the evidence can lead to enforcement action, including prosecution. In these cases, our experts provide clear, robust witness statements to support legal proceedings.
Report Pesticide Poisoning
Please call the WIIS on 0800 321600 if you see:
- Any animals you suspect may have been poisoned by pesticides
- Any spillage of a pesticide, particularly coloured seed, grain or pellets
- Any potentially poisonous baits, such as dead animals cut open and staked out
Please provide the following information:
- The location of the incident
- The number and type of casualties, or suspected poisonous baits
- Why you believe pesticides are involved
- Your name and contact telephone number
Novel analytical services – chemical monitoring in wildlife and beneficial insects
We use advanced analytical chemistry to test animal tissues and environmental samples, building a detailed picture of pesticide exposure and its effects. This work goes beyond individual cases. The data we generate helps shape regulation, strengthen detection methods and improve how pesticides are managed in the real world.
Our team works across a wide range of sample types, from animal tissue and bait to pollen and insects, identifying and interpreting pesticide residues with precision. We support investigations under the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme (WIIS) in England and Wales, helping turn scientific results into confident decisions.
We also continue to improve how this work is done. Through ongoing research and development, we refine analytical methods to keep pace with emerging risks and evolving chemical use.
The data from WIIS investigations is published quarterly by the Health and Safety Executive, providing transparency and insight into pesticide-related incidents across the UK.
Alongside pesticide testing, we offer analysis of other environmental contaminants, including PFAS, PAHs, PBDEs, PCBs and heavy metals, helping you understand wider risks to wildlife, ecosystems and public health.
WIIS investigates incidents involving wildlife, pets and beneficial species where pesticide exposure is suspected. This includes cases such as chemical spills, particularly treated seeds or pellets, and the use of potentially poisonous baits, such as exposed or tampered carcasses.
Together, we help bring clarity to complex incidents, supporting safer use of chemicals, stronger regulation and healthier ecosystems.
