Science for Agri Inputs

Agricultural inputs play a vital role in the success of farming operations.

Shaping the future of agricultural inputs

Understanding the different types, functions and safety of these inputs is fundamental for agriculture.

Net Zero Dairy by 2030

In 2023 our multiple disciplinary teams with expertise in sustainable agriculture, the circular economy, soil health and life cycle analysis, partnered with the world’s largest food and beverage company, Nestlé, to investigate how two initiatives can help deliver resilience within their supply chain and reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to the use of synthetic fertilisers.

Read about the project below.

The Challenge

Nestlé wanted to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from synthetic fertilisers and strengthen climate resilience across its agricultural supply chain — key steps toward achieving its goal of sourcing 50% of ingredients from regenerative agriculture by 2030.

The Approach

Fera partnered with Nestlé and Cargill on two innovative projects. One explored how seaweed-based bio-stimulants could improve soil health and crop resilience to stress such as heat and drought. The second investigated whether cocoa shells from Nestlé’s York factory could be transformed into a low-carbon fertiliser using circular economy principles.

The Result

Together, these initiatives are helping shape a more sustainable future for farming, with the potential to cut fertiliser-related emissions by up to 90%.
