Events like World Agri-Tech can take a little time to digest. In March, members of the Fera team attended the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit in San Francisco for the first time. The summit showcased the diversity of attendees, ranging from large multinational agrochemical businesses to independent growers worldwide, emphasizing the global scale of challenges and opportunities in agriculture today.
The key theme resonating across keynotes, panel discussions, and Fera's hosted Roundtable was the essential role of farmers and growers in Agri-tech innovation. While innovation is crucial, there is a delicate balance to maintain. Technologies must align with growers' operational context to ensure real-world success. Discussions highlighted the importance of not outpacing the market with technology advancements that may hinder adoption due to complexity, cost, or misalignment.
Sustainability emerged as a fundamental expectation at the summit. Topics like soil health, biodiversity, and climate resilience took the spotlight in discussions around investment, product development, and policy. The sector's shift towards sustainability as a core requirement for any product or service entering the agricultural market aligns closely with Fera's mission to enhance food system sustainability through innovation and science.
The summit's 'Startup Arena' provided a platform for early-stage businesses, particularly in the biopesticide, biostimulant, and biofertiliser sectors, to showcase their innovations. While the energy and innovation were palpable, the challenges of transitioning from lab-based innovation to commercialization were evident. Fera acknowledges the barriers faced by startups in areas like biopesticides and remains committed to supporting these innovators on their journey to market.
Attending World Agri-Tech USA offered valuable insights into the industry's direction, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among science, industry, and growers in driving innovation.
