James Rainford is a statistician at FERA focusing on the application of statistical modelling and machine learning to various datasets and the development and the maintenance of automated systems for data visualization. Prior to FERA his doctoral studies at the University of York focused on evolutionary relationship within the insects and their effect on trait modelling and diversification within this key group. More recently his work has focused on understanding data systems around agri-environmental systems and how these might be used to address key policy questions.

Key areas of concern include; How can we utilise our scientific understanding of test of performance to optimise our deployment of surveillance for potential pests? How can we best utilise the information in risk assessment of pesticides to help us to understand historic trends in usage? How can information of potential drivers of biodiversity change be understood and influenced through land use change? And what is the relationship between changes in flows on international trade and the risk of pest movement and food fraud?

James also plays a role in supporting statistical analysis across the business including the design and interpretation of studies and surveys, as well as feeding into policy and devlopement of appropriate data visualisation tools.
