Ian is a Plant Pathologist with extensive experience in molecular diagnostics, disease surveillance, pathogen epidemiology and in-field detection of plant pathogens in agricultural, horticulture and the natural environment.

Currently Ian is developing a national spore monitoring network for the Crop Health and Protection Centre (CHAP) to support more accurate disease risk forecasting for arable and horticultural cropping systems. Ian has worked on a wide range of projects covering quarantine plant pathogens such as Phytophthora ramorum, ash dieback and many indigenous species such as rusts and mildews. Recently Ian has been leading the research element of an EU project ‘Vitismart’ implementing novel disease diagnostic techniques in vineyards.

Through his research Ian has gained experience in developing and leading projects and is currently involved in the development of new smart services aimed at promoting more sustainable disease management practise.
