Azamethiphos is an organophosphate compound primarily used as an antiparasitic veterinary drug for fish farming. As a pesticide, it is used to control flies and cockroaches in buildings, stores and warehouses. Azamethiphos is moderately toxic to mammals and highly toxic to birds and aquatic species. Extreme care is required when azamethiphos is used in fish farming, as a slight to moderate overdosing can harm or kill the fish.
Azamethiphos is authorised in the UK for controlling sea-lice in farmed salmon. Azamethiphos is not approved for use as a pesticide in the EU under Regulation (EC) 1107/2009. Currently there are no MRLs set for azamethiphos in fish under pesticides Regulation (EC) 396/2005 or veterinary drug Regulation (EU) No 436/2012).
Azamethiphos is analysed at Fera using the state-of-the-art LC-MS/MS instrumentation for unequivocal and accurate results. Fera is the UK National Reference Laboratory for the analyses of pesticide residues with leading experts in the field carrying out tests to verify that food meets regulatory requirements and ensuring consumers are not exposed to unacceptable levels of pesticide residues.
