Contaminant Testing

Our experts focus on the scientific research relating to intentionally added food components and to those arising from chemical changes during food processing, bioactive chemicals and natural toxicants.

  1. AO Package (Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2, total and ochratoxin A)
Fera Science Limited can analyse food or feed samples to measure levels of Aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2, total Aflatoxins and Ochratoxin A. The methods used are fully compliant with EU contaminants legislation to allow you to assess your compliance with regulatory limits in place.
  2. Inorganic Arsenic (iAs)
Fera food testing experts use leading detection techniques to accurately identify levels of potentially toxic arsenic within food samples. From this valuable insight you can satisfy regulators on the safety of your foodstuffs.
  3. Acrylamide
Acrylamide is a chemical substance formed by a reaction between amino acids and sugars. It typically occurs when foods with high starch content such as potatoes, root vegetables and bread, are cooked at high temperatures (over 120°C) in a process of frying, roasting or baking.
  4. Free Asparagine
Fera can analyse your samples for the presence of free asparagine using our state-of-the-art liquid chromatography – high-resolution mass spectrometry suite, and accurately quantify where present.
  5. Ethyl carbamate (urethane)

Ethyl carbamate (EC), sometimes called urethane, is a naturally occurring compound in fermented foods and alcoholic beverages, and a known carcinogen. In many cases ethyl carbamate is formed by the reaction between cyanate and ethanol, though this is not the only means by which it forms.

  6. Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs)
PFASs are a range of synthetic chemical compounds, which are used across a range of industries, most notably within the food sector. One of their most well-known features is the resistance to stains, resulting in their extensive use within cookware and other equipment in regular contact with food.
  7. Bisphenol A - Food and Beverage, Infant Formula, or Food Packaging Samples
Bisphenol A is employed to make certain plastics and epoxy resins. BPA-based plastic is clear and tough, and is made into a variety of common consumer goods, such as water bottles. Epoxy resins containing are also used as coatings on the inside of many food and beverage cans.
  8. 1,3-DCP and 2,3-DCP Analysis

Feras contamination scientists are able to offer a range of MCPD test variants upon request. Please contact us to learn more.

  9. 2-MCPD Analysis
3-MCPD (3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol), 2-MCPD (2-monochloropropane-1,2-diol) and glycidyl esters are a by-product of processing or refining edible oils and fats and are only relatively recent in their discovery.
  10. 3-MCPD Analysis
3-MCPD (3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol), 2-MCPD (2-monochloropropane-1,2-diol) and glycidyl esters are a by-product of processing or refining edible oils and fats and are only relatively recent in their discovery.
  11. 3-MCPD & 2-MCPD Analysis
3-MCPD (3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol), 2-MCPD (2-monochloropropane-1,2-diol) and glycidyl esters are a by-product of processing or refining edible oils and fats and are only relatively recent in their discovery.
  12. 3-MCPD & 1,3-DCP Analysis
3-MCPD (3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol), 2-MCPD (2-monochloropropane-1,2-diol) and glycidyl esters are a by-product of processing or refining edible oils and fats and are only relatively recent in their discovery.
