Fera’s leading food authenticity scientists can analyse your samples for the presence of methoxy-1,2-propanediol (3-MPD) and cyclic diglycerols (CycDs), which are an indicator of potential adulteration with synthetic glycerol.

Because glycerol gives a sweet flavour to wine and contributes to its full-body taste, there is an economic incentive to add glycerol to a wine to mask its poor quality. Both 3-methoxy-1,2-propanediol (3-MPD) and cyclic diglycerols (CycDs) are recognized as impurities of technical glycerol and can be used to detect the illegal addition of synthetic glycerol.

Analysis for 3-MPD and Cyclic Diglycerols is conducted by our expert scientists with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry at our state-of-the-art facilities. The test can effectively verify the quality of wines, by confirming adulteration to improve sweetness hasn’t taken place, satisfying regulation and protecting consumers from food fraud.
