Introduction
Professor Sir Ian Boyd was Chief Scientific Adviser at Defra when Fera Science Ltd was created as a joint venture between Defra and Capita. He began as a Non-executive Director representing the government shareholder but moved to be an independent Non-executive Director when he left government.

Career History
Professor Sir Ian Boyd is currently a professor at the University of St Andrews and Chair of the UK Research Integrity Office. He was Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government on Food and the Environment (2012-2019).  

He is a marine and polar scientist and previously served as the first Director of the Scottish Oceans Institute at St Andrews. He is a director of a number of trusts and companies and is a Board member of UKRI. He is co-chair of the Environment Council for Scotland with Scotland’s First Minister.

Board Service, Honours, Special Skills and Education
Sir Ian Boyd serves on several other boards. He is Chair of the UK Research Integrity Office and is a Trutee of the National Oceanography Centre, the Campaign for Science and Engineering and UK Research and Innovation. He is also the President-elect of the Royal Society of Biology. He has a First Class Honours BSc from the University of Aberdeen, a PhD from Cambridge University, a DSc from the University of Aberdeen and honorary doctorates from Heriot-Watt University and the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth. He is a recipient of the Polar Medal, the Bruce Medal for Polar Science and the Silver Medal of the Zoological Society of London. He was awarded the annual medal of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management in 2021. He is a fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Society of Biology and he was knighted for services to science and economics in government in 2019.
