The aim of the Big Soil Community is to coordinate the sampling and analysis of soil bacteria and fungi from across a wide range of farms. Providing a rich benchmark of how these populations change across different farming systems.
Pay your deposit today to join the Big Soil Community and secure your sampling kit and analysis. Just click 'Add to Basket' to confirm your sampling kit and analysis slot. With the launch of the Big Soil Community, Fera is taking a novel approach to the way one of the big challenges to sustainable agriculture is overcome. By coordinating a community effort to sample and analyse the biodiversity of our soil microbial communities at scale, in a cost-effective and timely manner. Unpicking the complexity of soil biology will provide insight into the contribution and promise that these communities offer soil health and sustainable agriculture.
Launched at Cereals 2018. Over the next three months, farmers will be invited to sign up to the initiative so that by September sampling can begin. Individual and summary reports are being supplied in December and a full publication of results in January.
This product is a £50 non-refundable deposit (exc. VAT) towards the soil analysis costs of the Big Soil Community. The final cost of the sample is dependant on the number of participants but will not be more than a total of £250 per sample (exc. VAT). You will be asked to make the second payment in September when the final price point is declared. The aim of the Big Soil Community is to coordinate the sampling and analysis of soil bacteria and fungi from across a wide range of farms. This collective activity provides a rich benchmark of how these biological populations change across different farming systems.
By paying your deposit today you secure your sampling kit and analysis slot. The analysis uses Fera’s Soil Metabarcoding Services which provides a detailed breakdown of soil bacteria and fungi within a sample and across the community as a whole. As more people join the community the analysis price will decrease for all so please spread the word about the Big Soil Community and encourage others to join. To facilitate this price reduction the order process for this analysis is two stage, with the initial payment of a deposit to join the community and then a final payment when the order window closes. The maximum cost of analysis will be £250 per sample (exc. VAT). We are planning for sampling to be undertaken by the community through October. Samples kits, instructions, return information and guidance will be sent to you when the second payment is made.
