CBD Products - Safety Data & Novel Foods Application

Our services designed for you

We provide compliance and analytical testing services to the cannabinoid industry. Made up of senior scientists who have a broad and deep understanding of the CBD industry. With experience that we can bring to bear on your research project which goes beyond analysis and scientific expertise. Our extensive experience and knowledge in regulatory affairs across multiple industries underpins our success.

CBD Routine Testing

Fera have developed an analytical method using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) instrumentation that can screen and quantify cannabinoids at low concentrations (parts per million) within a variety of CBD products. Applicable product types include CBD oil, cream, capsules, vape oil/juice and chewable sweets as well as hemp derived food products such as hemp oil, seeds and protein powder. Please contact us if you are unsure your product is applicable for our methodology.

Dossier Support

We understand the relevant legislative frameworks and are uniquely positioned to assist you and help you meet the regulatory requirements in whichever market you need to register your CBD product. Preparing a detailed and thorough dossier of evidence and data is essential for a hassle-free product approval. We can help to ensure that you provide all the necessary evidence, compliance data and risk assessments to satisfy the requirements of the regulatory authority.  Get in touch.

Research & Development

The biggest headache in 2020 for manufacturers working in CBD will be navigating a challenging regulatory environment. Unlike hemp – which is legal in the EU and other markets – the legal status of products containing CBD is becoming clearer. CBD now falls under the Novel Food regulation, meaning it requires pre-market authorisation. With the FSA accepting this new classification of Novel Foods stuff - approval will be required with full legal compliance and the necessary safety data.

The FSA has accepted the classification by EFSA of CBD products and now expects all companies selling products containing CBD need to commit to apply for a Novel Foods Application

As the hemp plant, which is the source of CBD, naturally removes contaminants from soil, water and air (phyto-remediation), commercially available CBD may also contain a variety of these harmful impurities. With the decision taken by the FSA (Food Standards Agency) to accept the new classification by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) of CBD products as 'unauthorised novel foods', this means that all companies currently selling products containing CBD need to be committed to applying for a novel foods application.

The CBD sector has witnessed a phenomenal increase in awareness in recent times, propelled by a surge in consumer interest. The CBD market is currently estimated to hit £750m in the UK this year and £1bn by 2025 with new products for pain relief to even anti-wrinkle applications, CBD has been linked to a myriad of benefits across multiple industries. This has led to something of a gold rush among innovative challenger brands. But for all its potential, the category faces a minefield of regulatory, scientific and supply chain hurdles.

Fera has the best people in the right place focussed on delivering the right solution. We continuously invest in our people and support them in delivering the best science to our partners.
