BNYVV can cause severe damage if the infection spreads into the whole plant. Symptoms include yellowing of leaves in the field, narrow leaf blade, stunting and development of a root beard.

Plants are tested by ELISA because diagnosis of Rhizomania cannot be based solely on visual inspection. This is due to the variation in symptom expression.

Yield losses depend greatly on the weather conditions during the season, time of infection and the prevention measures used. In severe infections, yields can be reduced by 50% or more, while sugar contents can be significantly reduced, causing a dramatic effect on the financial success of this crop.
