Adsorption/Desorption Using a Batch Equilibrium Method

Adsorption/desorption studies are used to generate essential information on the mobility of chemicals and their distribution in the soil, water and air. They can be used to predict or estimate, for example, of the availability of a chemical for degradation, transformation and uptake by organisms; leaching through the soil; volatility from soil; and run-off from land surfaces into natural waters. Adsorption data can also be used for comparative and modelling purposes.

Estimation of the Adsorption Coefficient (Koc) on Soil and on Sewage Sludge using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

The sorption behaviour of substances in soils or sewage sludges is a useful indicator of the binding capacity of a chemical on organic matter in soil and sewage sludge. This allows comparisons to be made between different chemicals.

Leaching in Soil Columns

Man-made chemicals may reach soil directly via deliberate application (e.g. agrochemicals) or via indirect routes (e.g. via waste water, sewage sludge, soil or air, wet/dry deposition). To carry out risk assessments on these chemicals, it is important to estimate their potential for transformation in soil and for movement (leaching) into deeper soil layers and eventually into groundwater.

Field dissipation studies for actives and transformation products

This study evaluates laboratory and field dissipation to obtain values (DegT50) of pesticide active substances and their transformation and reaction products (metabolites) in soil. The values are used in the current FOCUS modelling frameworks for estimating groundwater and surface water exposure levels. In addition, they are used in the soil exposure scenarios developed by EFSA as a result of the revision of the Guidance Document on Persistence of Pesticides in Soil.


Bespoke chemical fate studies

Our scientists can also work with you to investigate the fate of chemicals under non-standard scenarios. All tests are performed to GLP standards for registration purposes, and can include:

  • Effects of rainfall on volatilisation of pesticides from a soil surface.
  • Air concentrations arising from transpiration of pesticides.
  • Domestic losses of biocides to the environment.
  • Veterinary medicinal product losses from farmyards.
  • Uptake of pharmaceuticals into plants.
