Fera work hard to ensure the continued success and innovations offered both locally and nationally. To ensure this remains the case we work closely with a network of key partners to ensure Fera continue to provide leading analysis solutions to industry.
CHAP is one of four Centres for Agricultural Innovation and a key component of the government’s Agri-Tech Strategy.
CHAP is designed to make sure that the knowledge and insight from the UK’s science base is translated into benefits for farmers, growers and the food industry both at home and abroad. The government and industry believe that wider adoption of science and technological innovation is the key to improving productivity and tackling problems such as soil erosion, adapting to climate change, managing the impact of pests and diseases, depleting natural resources, and providing environmentally friendly solutions.
Fera is a founding member of CHAP. Together we develop innovative solutions, such as the SMART-link decision Support Unit, where extensive datasets are used to inform risk mitigation strategies for a range of crop diseases. The E-Flow-link mesocosm by CHAP is developed, designed, managed and operated by Fera. This will allow plant products to be tested for safety in the aquatic environment.
With 25% ownership in Fera we work closely to safeguard food quality and mitigate environmental risks through effective analysis activites.
Defra is the UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. They play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink.
Their purpose is to unleash the economic potential of food and farming, nature and the
countryside, champion the environment and provide security against floods, animal and plant
diseases and other hazards.
As part of our National Reference Laboratory status Fera work closely with the VMD to develop, validate, and implement improved methods for (a) detecting and (b) determining the fate of drugs residues (both veterinary and human) in food, feed and environmental samples. The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) protects animal health, public health and the environment.
The VMD promote animal health and welfare by assuring the safety, quality and efficacy of veterinary medicines.
As an executive agency of the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) the VMD contribute to their objectives to protect public health and meet high standards of animal welfare. Their work also helps the Food Standards Agency to protect and improve the safety of food people eat.
